The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Looking Back on EMC World 2009

It has been a busy week.  I think each year my schedule get crazier and crazier while I am here at the conference.  As a result, I notice things that make it both easier, and more difficult, for me to accomplish everything that I set out to accomplish at the conference.  While it is all still fresh, and I wait for my ride, I want to share some thoughts on the conference.

Before I dive in, I want to say that I recognize that EMC has listened and tried to make the conference better for the Content Management professional. I appreciate the efforts and I hope that they continue to listen to the feedback.  No conference is perfect, but they should strive for perfection.

I shared, and gathered, these thoughts with people from EMC employees, partners, and customers.  This is a conference evaluation, not on the strategy or direction of EMC.  That will come later. Check my EMC World page for all my links.

Erin Samuels is going to be presenting on the other half of the SharePoint offering.  Andrew was going to speak, but everyone voted against it due to the potential lawsuit after the abuse he doled out yesterday. He is present and will probably speak despite our best efforts.

This is being presented by Frank Chao this morning.  It is a third day, 8am session, by design. This is typically a useful session that I prefer to see on the first day so I can better plan my conference, but they probably figure that attendance is lower so less people will hear it. This session’s slides are almost never published, so this is a can’t miss.

Moving around, trying to figure out the best session to attend and ended up here after Andrew told me to catch the next SharePoint session later today. This session is important because many users just want to work within Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook. Let’s see what Namrata Murlidhar has to say on this topic.

EMC World 2009: Documentum ECM 6.5 Architecture Overview

Victor Spivak, chief architect for the platform, is presenting on what is the most popular topic post from last year. Victor is smart and doesn’t mince words.  The session was mostly packed 15 minutes before it even started.

Victor is going to breeze through many of the things that haven’t changed in a year, so supplement these notes with last year’s notes.  These notes are “more accurate” if they conflict.
