Enter CMIS, a Proposed ECM-SOA Standard

I am almost too excited for words.  Every thought I have is leading down ten different paths.  You may ask why.  Simple, they finally announced an ECM-SOA standard.  This new standard, Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS), has been submitted to OASIS for approval.  This is the same standard that I initially learned about at EMC World.

Emails streamed to me all day alerting me to this announcement, and I was blissfully offline.  Now I wish some people (you know who you are) had told me to pay attention this morning.  As it is, I’ve decided to let everyone of you know about it and give some thoughts to the effort.  I still have to review the actual specification and find out what this means to each of the key vendors.

CenterStage Beta has Begun!!!

Too important to not post this in addition to the big CMIS news.  If you signed up for the CenterStage (formerly Magellan) Beta, you can download the software on the CenterStage Beta site hosted by EDN Labs.  They plan to start taking feedback the week of the 22nd, so get to it.

Forecasting the Future of Documentum and SharePoint

I look at the numbers.  I know that I get a bump in readership just by using the workword SharePoint.  It also happens to be a vital issue to the Documentum world.  Aside from the future of CenterStage vs. SharePoint, which is a non-starter until we see a non-beta CenterStage, there is this simple fact.  People are adopting SharePoint and are looking for help more and more often.  This can be in the way of services, but can also be from and enhanced architecture created with the help of Documentum.

Well, we’ve been patient, and Andrew has begun to share some of his thinking with us.  Andrew Chapman is a great person and lets his sense of humor show in his blog.  If you don’t find it funny, you are doomed in the ECM world.  If there is any field that requires a sense of humor, it is ECM.

The New Developer Network and ECM Design Patterns

It has been a while since my last real post.  It hasn’t been for lack of things to talk about, I’ve just been extremely busy.  I am still behind on things, but I can see the light and this is a topic that just won’t wait.

One of the things that I’ve set as a goal is to build a better, stronger community for Documentum experts.  This isn’t just for developers, or only a place to go to ask questions.  It is building a sense that we are all in this together.  For those that haven’t noticed, the EMC Developer Network recently went through the promised upgrade into a tool that will allow us to build that Documentum Community.

Documentum 6.5 is Released

Just so you know, last night I saw the first bits of D6.5 on the download site. The entire core stack is out. If you are a partner, you may not see some components as they are fixing some of the entitlements. I expect that to be fixed quickly. [Edit 8/5/2008: Fixed.] Share and enjoy.

Also, D7 is slated for Q4 2009. This is on schedule for 18 months after D6.5, as their strategy for releases dictates.

Where Do You Store the Content Metadata?

Recently, Sumanth Molakala sent me a comment regarding the best place to store metadata.

Here is the relevant portion of his comment:

…one of the key items I am trying to address in it is managing meta-data. I am sure you are aware of the two schools of thought – One – save content in content server and meta-data outside of the content server in a “custom” meta-data repository (assuming that the world doesn’t revolve around Documentum). Two – the traditional approach to save content and meta-data in the content server…

The CMS Watch Vendor Map

A while back, CMS Watch came out with an updated vendor map, which is designed as a subway map.  While it does serve as a quick checklist of a vendors capabilities, it is just more fun to look at it.  Here is a copy of the 2008 version, but you can download it on their site and get some options.

This year they are offering swag in their store with images of the map as the pretty graphic.  No interest for me there, at first.  I then saw this line:

Regarding the latter, perhaps you already own your fill of mugs and mousepads, but can you ever have enough beer steins? Bring it to the next event where we’re speaking and we’ll fill it up with the closest available brew. 😉

Alas, none of the events are coming to any events I plan on attending.  I would buy the beer stein for a chance to get it filled up.  After all, that is makes it a beer stein and not just another piece of swag.  Plus Tony is always fun and interesting to talk to, with or without a frosty beverage.

Knowledge Management is Marching Along

For anyone that ever thought that Knowledge Management is dead, go forth into the blogsphere and watch it emerge anew. Like a Phoenix, it is rising from the ashes and beginning debates over again. It is nice to go back in time at reflect at how things were. It is even nicer to see the concepts that I’ve always thought important being revived as KM again.

Enterprise 2.0, What, Why, and Knowledge Management

So Billy and I started to discuss his article published by AIIM last month. Before that got very far, it got sidetracked by a new blog launch. Luckily for me, Bex finally jumped in to fill the conversational void. He threw out a definition and then started talking about what Enterprise 2.0 isn’t. I don’t fault him for that as I doubt that I could do better on the topic. I do believe that I can contribute though, so here it goes…

Documentum Connector for MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 Overview and Demo

At the EMC Federal Government Forum, we were treated to a surprise, the overview of a new SharePoint/Documentum integration. Slated to be released shortly, it appears to replicate the features of the existing SharePoint products. The difference is that the Documentum Connector for MOSS 2007 is based upon DFS and Web Services and is customizable. This means that what you see is what you start with, not what you get.
