Craig Randall recently posted how he was presenting on Building Content-Enabled Applications at EMC World, at least until he was downed by injury. Regardless of his injury, this is a topic of great interest to me and I had a few conversations over the past year with him on the topic. I wanted to chime in on his post to both amplify it and see if we can get some dialog going in advance of the conference.

Answering James on CMIS
Back in December, James asked a few good questions regarding CMIS. I thought I would take a minute to answer them as best I could, with apologies for the delay. Any insight into making my answers more complete are welcome. I am only on the outside looking into the process.
Where in the World is Pie?
As you may have noticed, I’ve been a little inactive lately. If you are even more observant, you may have noticed a few references to the fact that I was very busy in August and September. After all, CMIS was finally released last month and I haven’t even posted an analysis on how it measures up from a technical standpoint.
The answer is a little more complex than too much going on a daily basis. It boils down to one thing, borderline burnout. I’ve not only not been doing anything on my commute even remotely work-related, I’ve sometimes been going home and night and not even using a computer! I think my wife hasn’t said anything because I think she is happy about that behavior, even if it is a warning sign.
Documentum Connector for MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 Overview and Demo
At the EMC Federal Government Forum, we were treated to a surprise, the overview of a new SharePoint/Documentum integration. Slated to be released shortly, it appears to replicate the features of the existing SharePoint products. The difference is that the Documentum Connector for MOSS 2007 is based upon DFS and Web Services and is customizable. This means that what you see is what you start with, not what you get.
Old Documentum Architecture Habits are Hard to Break
A while back, John Kominetz wrote a nice post on The Elephant and the Blind Man. I’ve been checking John out for a while and been looking for an excuse to link to his stuff for a while, but I always get sidetracked. Aside from his fun habit to reference Douglas Adams, he has been working with Documentum for a very long time. He has developed a healthy skepticism about the product.
In his post on the Elephant, John talks about the load of Junk DNA in Documentum. As the product has evolved over the last 15 years, things have been left behind and other things that worked, haven’t evolved. My recent post on the Audit Trail has led to a couple of posts addressing both of these aspects.
Sailing with EMC’s Magellan
I’ve been debating on whether to talk about Magellan or SharePoint next. It was a heck of a decision, but I quickly resolved it when I decided to do both. I pulled out my notes, did a little research, and remembered the disclaimer. This is unreleased software. Things may change before the Magellan Beta, much less the final release.
Shall we set sail…
Hot Topics from EMC World 2008: CMA Edition
Now that I’ve gotten the “rant” out of me regarding on how EMC World needs to improve, not to mention all of that coffee, let’s start hitting the positives. I will dive into more details on most of these, but I wanted to share something besides random thoughts in the middle of my notes. So, off we go, in no particular order.

EMC World 2008: Documentum Foundation Services (DFS) – Best Practices and Real World Examples
Michael Mohen and Paul Kwitkin of EMC Professional Services are going to share some of their experiences with DFS in the wild. I’ve been looking forward to this session and Craig had some good things to say about it earlier. Would be nice to hear directly from a client though. However, can’t blame Michael and Paul for that little detail. On to the show.
EMC World 2008: SaaS-Enabled ECM
Decided to hear what EMC is thinking about in regards to Software as a Service. SaaS is grabbing a lot of attention these days. Ameet Jani, on the Server team, is going to be sharing thoughts on how to build SaaS applications on Documentum.
EMC World 2008: Day Two Thoughts
As I finally get to drink some coffee and I await the start of the next session, I thought I would share some basic thoughts.
- I like Craig. Always thought I would, now I know. He had a post on a couple of sessions from yesterday. I am attending the first one he mentioned, DFS Real World examples, tomorrow at 10. We’ve has several off-line conversations, both work-related and not. James would even be pleased with some of the topics.
